The Ottawa region Chapter of the Ontario Association for Family Mediation provides this list of family mediators as a service to prospective clients. Every mediator on the list is a member of the Ontario Association for Family Mediation and Family Mediation Canada, and are subject to their Codes of Professional Conduct.

However in offering this list, we are not endorsing or guaranteeing the competence, training or experience of any mediator, nor can we make any specific recommendations about anyone on the list. We urge you to be good consumers of mediation services and to obtain more information directly from individual mediators regarding their qualifications and experience. If you wish, you may request references from lawyers, counsellors or other referral sources. Most mediators restrict their mediation practice to specific areas according to their training and expertise. Our policy statement regarding qualifications is attached to this list.

Mediators who help families deal with marital separation and divorce sometimes restrict their practice to specific areas according to their training and expertise.

WE BELIEVE FAMILIES ARE BEST SERVED BY USING MEDIATION SERVICES FROM A TRAINED MEDIATOR TO DEAL WITH THE ISSUES AT HAND. WE ALSO BELIEVE CHILDREN COME FIRST AND THEIR ISSUES SHOULD BE GIVEN PRIORITY IN ANY MEDIATION SERVICE.

FAMILY RELATIONS MEDIATORS who typically have a background in counselling and child development deal with:

• parenting issues after separation and divorce
• inter-family disputes, including parent-child and inter-generational conflict
• child protection issues

FINANCIAL FAMILY MEDIATORS who typically have a legal background deal with:

• financial issues of child and spousal support after separation
• division of property after separation
• other financial or business disputes

COMPREHENSIVE FAMILY MEDIATORS who have training in both areas provide comprehensive services, and other mediators form partnerships to provide comprehensive services through co-mediation.

IT IS ADVISABLE THAT CONSUMERS DETERMINE THE TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE OF POSSIBLE MEDIATORS PRIOR TO RETAINING THEIR SERVICES.
